How to make money as an Artist online?

Updated: Aug 9, 2022

I decided to write this article in order to be helpful for beginning artist!

Now, it is easier than ever to make money online as an artist. Easier in any way doesn't mean easy! It is still a lot of work and dedication, but don't be discouraged- there are many different ways, and you should find what suits you best.

In my experience, it is best to combine active and passive income.

What does it mean?

Active income is when you create something or perform a tast, and getting paid for it.

Passive is when you get paid for a passive activity. You don't actively create anything for a specific client.

Examples for artists

Active

Commissions - you can create on demand artworks in your niche, depending what you do. You could be an illustrator like me, and make commissioned paintings for clients, or illustrate books for author. Or make jewelry or other craft, with customized details for your client.

Online shop - you can sell works you've already created on your online shop. You could use Etsy, Big Cartel, or create your own shop. You still have the shop to handle customer service, package and ship your orders.

Participate in art bazaars- you can sell your works life when you participate in art bazaars, comic con and similar events. Make sure to be friendly and talkative with your customers, and have a wide variety of products. It helps if you decorate your table and make it pretty and inviting!

Patreon- you can create exclusive content for your fans on your Patreon! This is a great way for people to support their favourite artist and to choose the level of investment they would like to make.

Passive

Digital products (online shop)- you could use your shop for passive income when you sell digital products. This could be brushes for PhotoShop or Procreate, Printables (bookmarks, stationery etc), digital art zines or tutorials or anything you can think of. Once you've created and posted your products, there is no shipping or anything else to handle.

Online courses- If you are a specialist in a certain sphere, you could start working on your own online course! There are many platforms (like Skillshare, Domestika, etc) where you could host your course. Another option is you creating your own website.

I hope this was helpful for you! If you have any ideas or examples you feel could benefit this article, drop them in the comment section!
